The cheese dairy in Goldingen (right) and the Postbus stop (left)

Hans is an older, stubborn and closed cheesemaker from a village cheese dairy . He has to fight for every customer. His only long-standing employee is retiring. Hans can hardly cope with the work alone, the quality suffers and his best customer jumps off him. The cheese merchant has to bring him this damning news. Hans' son-in-law offers him a job in the cheese factory, where he works as head of marketing himself.

One morning an African refugee lies coughing in the goat barn of his remote house. He had entered Switzerland illegally and was looking for work to pay for an urgently needed eye operation for his daughter. Reluctantly, but on the advice of Hansen's daughter Maria - a nurse - Rashid is taken in and cared for in the house. When Rashid shows himself to be a helpful and imaginative worker in the cheese dairy, Hans gradually thaws out, and the blocked relationship with grandchild Mirjam also changes positively.

Locations

Exterior scenes were shot in Goldingen and in the See-Gaster region of the canton of St. Gallen . The dairy in the film is identical to the dairy in Goldingen. The house in which the application is submitted for the cheese competition in which Hans wins first prize is the Curti house in Rapperswil .
