Nitrosomonas oligotropha is a species of bacteria in the genus Nitrosomonas . It is a nitrifying bacterial species which metabolizes ammonia (NH 3 ) to nitrite (NO 2 - ) and thereby gains energy.

features

The cells are rod-shaped with rounded ends or spherical, 0.8-1.2 X 1.1-2.4 micrometers in size. Like all bacteria of the Proteobacteria group, the species is gram-negative . Nitrosomonas oligotropha is aerobic , the bacterium needs oxygen.

The species can use urea as a source of ammonium. Nitrosomonas oligotropha , like all members of the Nitrosomonadaceae family , is chemolithoautotrophic , i. H. Inorganic electron donors (ammonia) are used to generate energy, the species does not depend on organic energy and carbon sources.

Nitrosomonas oligotropha occurs in oligotrophic fresh water.

metabolism

Like all Nitrosomonadaceae, Nitrosomonas oligotropha is one of the nitrifiers. The metabolism is based on nitrification , ammonia (NH 3 ) is oxidized to nitrite (NO 2 - ).

The oxidation of ammonia brings electrons into an electron transport chain . A proton motor force is generated, which ultimately leads to the formation of ATP . For carbon fixation , the nitrifying bacteria use the Calvin cycle , which is also used during photosynthesis in plants.
