Just as the country doctor Michael Mangold wants to propose marriage to his girlfriend, the policewoman Lena Stern, the doorbell rings: The orphaned children of his friend Jörg Klein's half-sister, Lena's ex-fiancé, Laura and Tini with the baby Jesus, are at the door. When he finally puts forward his marriage proposal in the evening, Michael learns of his girlfriend's dreams about a career in the higher police force and sees his offspring dwindling with her.
Since Jörg has firmly planned a research trip to the Antarctic, Lena and Michael take the children in until the youth welfare office has found a foster family. But from day one, the kids cause a lot of hustle and bustle in the already slightly chaotic temporary household of their parents: Laura does not eat meat, Jesus only tolerates mare's milk and the children's small dog hauls fleas in Michael's practice.
While Lena and her colleagues are looking for a horse-slitter, Michael secretly treats the injured suspect Thomas Dorn. After the youth welfare office has found three places for the children, they flee and are then taken back to the two of them. Lena makes friends more and more with the idea of adopting Laura, Tini and Jesus. That doesn't suit Michael at all, who wants his own children. In an argument, he first leaves the house, but then courageously takes on the role of father. The conflict about the wanted animal abuser also dissolves when someone else is arrested. Finally the wedding takes place and Jörg Klein has returned to congratulate. He and the children proclaim that they are moving in together, but Michael counters that the adoption has already been applied for. At the same time, Lena announces offspring number four.
