When emergency auto insurer , even emergency center called, running since 1999, all incoming emergency calls of nearly 17,000 columns on the German highways together. The auto insurers' emergency call is a service provided by GDV Dienstleistungs-GmbH (GDV DL) of the German Insurance Association. V. (GDV) based in Hamburg . The responsible telecommunications master offices of the state road construction authorities are responsible for the technical support of the pillars. In 2019, as part of a Europe-wide invitation to tender, GDV DL again received the order to query the emergency calls on the motorway emergency telephones until 2023.

According to the GDV DL, up to 500 calls are accepted every day. About two thirds of these are breakdown assistance requests.

The emergency call center primarily takes care of calls that are received through the emergency telephones throughout Germany. In Hamburg , the data from breakdown or accident reports from road users are recorded. All the locations of the emergency telephones are geo-measured. The location of the road user is displayed directly on the screens in the emergency call center when the emergency call box is activated. The employees in the emergency call center use the geographical information so that the required help can be quickly organized. A sticker on the emergency call box also provides information about its location. The emergency telephones either have a flap that must be lifted or two buttons. The red button is used for emergency calls. The emergency call center puts the caller in direct contact with the local police or rescue control center. A conference call between the road user, the police or rescue workers ensures quick help on site.

The yellow button on the column helps in the event of a breakdown. The breakdown call received is then immediately recorded and help is organized. That is, depending on the wishes of the road user, an automobile club, a towing service via a breakdown protection letter from the car insurance company or a freelance rescuer from the surrounding area.

The emergency telephones are 2 km apart. The white delimitation posts along the highways show where the next emergency telephone is. Black arrows on it show the way to the nearest column.

The accident reporting service (UMD), an automatic emergency call system for cars, also offers help on the go. The accident reporting service is used for serious accidents as well as for sheet metal damage and breakdowns. Experienced emergency agents receive incoming accident reports, initiate appropriate measures and provide the necessary help. The UMD is a service provided by German insurers. The starting point is the eCall automatic emergency call system adopted by the European Commission : Since April 2018, all new vehicle models in Europe have to be equipped with an emergency call system that automatically forwards the vehicle's location data to the rescue control centers in the event of a serious accident . After an accident, an ambulance is sent to the scene of the accident, so that people can also be rescued who are unconscious or unable to make a phone call for other reasons.

Another service of GDV DL is the central call of the car insurers. By calling the car insurer's central number (0800 25 026 00), the opposing insurance company can be determined after a claim in connection with road traffic.
