production

Director Oliver Stone met with Vladimir Putin during his 2015 trip to speak with Edward Snowden to make a film about him.

The preparation of the “Interview with Putin” project took over two years, during which Stone repeatedly met with the president for interviews, most recently after the election of the US president. A total of around 20 hours of interviews were recorded from July 2015 to February 2017, which were combined into twelve conversations.

According to Stone, the main objective of the film is to get the US to adopt a different position in order to prevent further deterioration in relations between the countries.

Referring to the talks with Putin, Stone said that he impressed him with his leadership skills and defended Russia's interests: "He's the real son of Russia." During the filming, Stone was impressed by the Russian president's discipline, efficiency and perseverance.

broadcast

The film premiered on June 12, 2017, and the rest of the series aired daily through June 15.

The same film was called "Putin" on Russian television.

Reactions

Of "the most beautiful propaganda in was NZZ 's speech:" They are jovial conversations in which Stone figures as stooges so that Putin can install its propaganda. "

The Süddeutsche Zeitung headlined: "No documentation, but an autocrat porno" and Die Zeit wrote of a coup for Putin; "The best propaganda is always what others do for you."

In a very similar way, Novaya Gazeta saw the series as a “giveaway”, while Oleg Kashin wrote that there was actually nothing to say, but the switched on cameras made it impossible to break off the conversation. Their transcript was probably the craziest text that had been published on the President's homepage; At first he should have thought about whether that might not have been sabotage.

Prices

On August 18, 2017 at the 23rd Sarajevo Film Festival , the film won the audience's sympathy award in the documentary section.
