The Treasure Island Thing ( Five on a Treasure Island ) is an eight-part English television production from 1957.

The book Enid Blyton's Five Friends Explore Treasure Island served as a template for the film adaptation .

content

The Five Friends: Georgina, called George, Julian, Anne, Dick and George's run-up dog Timmy, a border collie , are looking for a treasure that is said to be off the coast on Kirrin Island. The treasure hunt turns out to be more difficult than hoped, because two gangsters got on their tracks and the treasure. Despite the adversity, the children ultimately manage to lift the treasure that is hidden in a castle ruin on the island and arrest the crooks.

background

The 1957 mini-series, shot in black and white, was the first film adaptation of an adventure by Enid Blyton's Five Friends . Shortly before, in 1955/1956, there was a first Five Friends adaptation, called The Famous Five - Adventure , for which Enid Blyton provided a script, but this theater production was not filmed. But now, two years later, the first volume of the Five Friends series has been adapted for the film. The film adaptation was produced by the British Lion Film Corporation . The Children's Film Foundation , whose archive is now owned by the British Film Institute , took over the distribution .

For the role of Quentin Kirrin, the actor Peter Burton was cast, who later chases James Bond in the first James Bond film , Dr. No the scientist Q played. The dog role had been cast with a border collie named Daga. The film was shot in Corfe Castle , Dorset, among others .

The production premiered in England in August 1957 . This was followed by premieres in Germany , on February 4, 1964 on ARD , in Sweden on March 23, 1958 and in Finland on December 11, 1959.

The film was released on video in the English language version and initially only in a limited number of 500 copies and was therefore hardly available. However, the DVD with the mini-series was released in 2010. This version only contains the English soundtrack and an English subtitle. The German DVD version was released on April 15, 2011.

The Children's Film Foundation didn't release a sequel called Five Have a Mystery to Solve until 1964 , starring other actors.
