action

In 1825 India is under the control of the English . At that time, fear spread in India over the existence of a group of murderers who systematically kill people and commit ritual murders. William Savage, an English officer, accidentally discovers these events and decides to fight them against the will of his superiors, who do not want to interfere in the affairs of the Hindus .

He manages to arrest one of these killers and discovers that they belong to a sect called the Thugs. They worship the goddess Kali and kill for her. With his help, he infiltrates this group and gets to know their habits. He witnesses how they commit crimes in the name of Kali and how English officials cover them in exchange for bribes.

However, the deceivers come closer and closer to the truth about him, and as he undergoes their rituals, he becomes more and more like them. Eventually they discover who he is and want to kill him. They call him the greatest deceiver of all and try to destroy him completely, but he manages to escape them and call for help. So he manages to save himself and uncover their machinations. When the East India Company , ruling India on behalf of England, realizes how dangerous the sect is, they decide to commission William Savage to destroy them all over India, which he then does systematically, but events then have him permanent Way traumatized.

Historical background

In this film, the Thuggee , also called Phansigar, are discussed. This is a historical brotherhood of religiously motivated murderers and robbers that flourished in pre-colonial India. The Thuggee are accused of killing up to two million people in the course of their centuries of history. In any case, no other group has committed more murders than the Thuggee. At the beginning of the 19th century this was smashed by the British colonial power.

criticism

The film service believes that the adventure film “shot at original locations” “with a lush decor” is “hardly exciting” and “failed to describe the clash of two cultures in a colonialist's mental conflict”.
