The times of day (Telemann)
The times of day is a cantata cycle by Georg Philipp Telemann . It consists of four parts: Morning, Midday, Evening, and Night . It can be found in the Telemann Works Directory (TWV) at 20:39. The work was premiered on October 20, 1757 in the Hamburg "Drillhaus" under Telemann's direction. The libretto comes from Friedrich Wilhelm Zachariä , it was influenced by the natural poetry Barthold Heinrich Brockes .
The oratorio
The work is divided into four parts. Each of the four solo cantatas is dedicated to a section of the day's course. The pitch of the voice and the instrumentation change. The performance lasts less than an hour.
The morning
- Aria : The morning comes, with it joy
- Recitative : The whole sky floats in shine
- Aria: Almighty, great in the sunshine
- Chorus : Welcome, lovely morning!
The voice range is soprano , with a solo trumpet added.
The noon
- Aria: Noon, accompanied by fanning hours
- Recitative: Receive me, venerable oak forest!
- Aria: Let me feel the sweet lust
- Chorus: Up, follow the fiery chariot of the sun
The pitch is alto , with a viola da gamba added.
The evening
- Aria: Lower yourself from purple clouds
- Recitative: The forest is dark green
- Aria: Come, sweet sleep!
- Choir: from rise to fall
The pitch is tenor , and two flutes appear.
The night
- Aria: O night, and you, sacred silence!
- Recitative: She is coming; her bright star dress
- Aria: How will the night of the grave escape
- Chorus: The Lord is God, a God of honor
The pitch is bass , and two oboes and a bassoon are added.
