The Portuguese Riberda sees Leila at a slave market , which is about to be sold. Since this is very pretty, he buys it and offers it to his friend Dr. van Zuylen, who accompanies him, as a gift. This outraged refuses. Years later, van Zuylen meets both of them again - as a married couple . Riberda is on the verge of ruin , but although Leila and van Zylen fall in love, she does not want to leave Riberda. Riberda notices this. To give both of them a future, he commits suicide .
