The Hunger Games - Flammender Zorn (original title: Mockingjay ; a fictional bird species, literally "mocking jay ", translated into German as "mocking boobies ") is the third volume of the three-part novel series The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins .

action

After being freed from the arena of the 75th Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen is in the underground District 13, as District 12 of the Capitol was destroyed by incendiary bombs. District 13, which used to manufacture nuclear weapons, is officially considered destroyed and no longer existent. Several districts are in revolt against the Capitol.

Katniss pays a visit to her devastated home, District 12. The place where she spent her childhood was almost completely destroyed by the Capitol. In the house that Katniss received from the Capitol after the 74th Hunger Games, she finds a white rose that is unmistakably a warning from President Snow.

After the first war, District 13, like the Capitol, was in possession of nuclear weapons. Therefore, an agreement was signed between the district and the Capitol, according to which the district was officially destroyed. The residents of the district live in an underground bunker system and coexistence is strictly regulated.

At one of the meetings, a television broadcast takes place in which Peeta calls for a ceasefire between the two warring parties, which, however, would be detrimental to the rebels. The leadership of the uprising therefore sees Peeta as a collaborator . Gale can then convince Katniss to take on the role of the mocking booby for the rebels. Katniss sets certain conditions for this, including the pardon of the tributes, which also includes Peeta.

Katniss' preparation team from the Games, which was held captive by District 13, equips her with a mocking booby costume based on the designs of her Capitol-murdered stylist Cinna. In this costume, TV commercials with Katniss are shot, which are fed into the television program of the Capitol. While filming one of these spots in District 8, there is an attack on the Capitol, which destroys a military hospital in which Katniss had previously spoken to the people.

When the Capitol airs another interview with Peeta, there is a commotion in the television studio when the rebels are able to hack into the cable system again. Peeta can warn Katniss and District 13 of an impending Capitol attack.

After Peeta's warning of an attack, Haymitch and President Coin and their management team have the upper bunker systems evacuated.

After Katniss had an emotional breakdown out of fear for Peeta, Gale and other comrades-in-arms from District 13 manage to free Peeta and other Capitol prisoners in a surprise attack a short time later. Peeta has no physical injuries, but has been psychologically tortured and manipulated with the help of neurotoxins, so he sees Katniss as a Capitol mutation that he must fight. Peeta is no longer able to distinguish real events from manipulated ones.

When the rebels gain the upper hand in almost all the other districts except the second, Katniss voluntarily allows herself to be transferred to District 2 in order to gain distance from Peeta, as she sees him as incurable. Weapons systems are manufactured in a mine in the district.

Since the district is largely loyal to the Capitol, there is more resistance here than in other districts. After numerous fights, the entrances to the mine are blocked by artificial landslides. Katniss is injured while trying to convince the fleeing soldiers and workers from the mine of the peaceful surrender. A peacekeeper shoots them and is then killed by the angry miners.

After Katniss' recovery, the wedding of Finnick and his partner will be celebrated in the District 13 bunker system. Peeta makes a cake for the wedding, which is seen as a small step towards his recovery.

Katniss is integrated into the attack on the Capitol to the extent that she and her unit are accompanied by a camera team that films fictitious attack scenarios. Peeta is also assigned to this unit.

Since Peeta was assigned to Katniss' unit, the head of the unit assumes that Peeta was assigned to them as a "ticking time bomb" to kill Katniss, who would no longer pose a threat to the power of the District 13 president. When a mine goes off during a fictitious mission for the film team, a chain reaction arises in which further traps are set off and some of the team die. In the chaos, the team flees to the underground of the Capitol, where mutant creatures chase after them and further decimate the group. Katniss, who was initially dismissive of Peeta, is now trying to bring him back to reality.

After fleeing underground, the team set off for the Presidential Palace, where Katniss watched parachutes with bombs being dropped over a group of children. When a rebel rescue team arrives, including Katniss' little sister Prim, more bombs explode, killing Prim and seriously injuring Katniss.

In the Capitol, she meets President Snow in the rose garden, who explains to her that it was not his order to kill the children or Prim and the rest of the helpers. He also explains his view of President Coin and her hunger for power.

When the execution of President Snow takes place, Katniss combines the information known to her and comes to the conclusion that Coin viewed her as an opponent. By assigning Peeta to their unit, Coin had provoked that Peeta would kill Katniss. In addition, Prim was only allowed to participate in the relief effort with the approval of the highest authority. Furthermore, during one of her visits to the weapons department of District 13, Katniss had already seen construction plans for the bombs that had torn her sister to her death. Katniss comes to the conclusion that it is not President Snow, who is already seriously ill, to blame for her suffering, but President Coin. That's why she doesn't kill Snow, but Coin. In the ensuing turmoil, President Snow also dies.

A trial of Katniss' act ensues, in which she is declared mentally insane and is sent back to her destroyed home district. Some time later, Peeta follows her, while Gale goes to District 2 to help build it up there.

In the epilogue , Katniss and Peeta have two children who are playing in a meadow. This is actually a mass grave, in which the dead were buried after the destruction of the district by the Capitol.
