Peter Kalkhof

Peter Kalkhof (born December 20, 1933 in Leopoldshall , † February 24, 2014 in London ) was a German painter , draftsman and graphic artist of concrete art .

Life

Kalkhof spent his childhood in Braunsberg (East Prussia) from 1938 to 1944 . From 1944 to 1946 the family fled via Berlin - the father was killed in the " Battle for Berlin " - to Neundorf (Anhalt) and in 1946 came to the British occupation zone in Braunschweig and finally to Herrhausen am Harz .

From 1952 to 1955 Kalkhof completed an apprenticeship as a color chemigrapher in Braunschweig and studied painting at the Werkkunstschule there under Bruno Müller-Linow, among others . From 1956 to 1960 he studied painting at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart with Hermann Sohn and Manfred Henninger , and he learned lithography with Erich Mönch . A scholarship enabled him to continue studying at the Slade School of Fine Art in London ( England ) from 1960 to 1961 . In 1961 he received a travel grant from the Slade School and toured the British Isles . After studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1962, he moved to London in 1963. After working at Curwen Press (lithography) in London, he received a lectureship in lithography and etching at the University of Reading in Reading in 1964 . From 1970 to 1999 he was a lecturer in painting at the Department of Fine Art there.

After completing his studies, but especially after moving to London, where he lived and worked for half a century, Peter Kalkhof went on numerous study trips: In 1969 (and several times in later years), he traveled to California and Arizona (Grand Canyon) in addition to European countries ); 1973 (as well as 1979 and 1992) Indonesia; 1974 (and 1986) Mexico and Yucatán; 1975 India and Nepal; 1976 Japan; 1977 (again 2006) China and Thailand; 1978 South America, especially Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and northern Chile; 1980 the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands (where he worked with natives), Hawaii; 1982 Egypt, Alexandria to Abu Simbel; 1985 the Soviet Union (Moscow, Novgorod, Leningrad), South Africa; In 1990 he visited the tri-border region Burma, Thailand, Laos and the island of Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand; 2004 Santiago de Chile and Easter Island in the South Pacific.

Kalkhof was married to the Indonesian jewelry designer Jeanne Thé, whom he had met while studying at the Stuttgart Academy. In the spring of 1959 he received first prize in the academy competition of the Stuttgart Art Academy for a picture from a series of portraits he had painted of Jeanne Thé. In 1997, a year after his wife's death, Peter Kalkhof published a book in London about her jewelry designs. There is a son from the marriage.

Peter Kalkhof died on February 24, 2014 in London after a serious illness.
