Part 1 - The spark

After the 74th Hunger Games, Katniss and Peeta return to District 12, plagued by nightmares . Both move with their families into a house in the village of the winner , which exists in each district. Katniss and Peeta are on the Tour of the Winners , where they visit each district to celebrate their victory in the Hunger Games. Again, it is a compulsory course. Before the tour, however, Katniss receives a visit from President Snow, the most powerful person in Panem. He fears that Katniss' “berry trick”, with which she changed the rules of the game in the Capitol and thus undermined its power, could lead to uprisings in the districts. Snow threatens her with killing all those she loves, should she fail to convince him of her love for Peeta on the tour.

With this knowledge she prepares for the tour of the winners . She receives support from her mentor Haymitch as well as the stylist Cinna and his crew. Katniss and Peeta take the train to their first stop on the tour, District 11, Rues and Thresh's home.

During the ceremony in Council Square in District 11, she addressed words of thanks to the people. In appreciation, an older man whistles the tune Rue whistled to keep Katniss safe. This acts as a signal to the residents, they greet Katniss with the gesture with which she said goodbye to the dead Rue. At the end of the ceremony the tributes are taken away, but Katniss and Peeta accidentally learn that peacekeepers are shooting the old man who blew the whistle. Two more shots are fired, the victims of which are unknown. Scared of the effects of their behavior during the Games and their words to District 11, the two winners continue the tour and notice the popular dissatisfaction with the Capitol building slowly. In an interview, Peeta tries to settle the dispute that has arisen between Katniss and President Snow. Peeta asks Katniss to marry him, and the president promises them a wedding in the Capitol.

Back in District 12, she tries to persuade Gale to go into the wild with her families, Haymitch and Peeta. Although Gale confesses his love to Katniss, he is later no longer convinced of it. He doesn't want to run away from the problems in the district, especially with Peeta. Surveillance in the district has been tightened to nip unrest in the bud. This is also related to a change in the Supreme Peacekeeper. Gale is later almost whipped to death by the new peacekeeper . Then the hob (a black market ) is burned down, working hours are extended, wages are cut and, in general, the laws are enforced much more strictly. For this purpose, various instruments are placed in the central square, including a. a pillory and a gallows . After a short time, the fence surrounding the district will also be permanently energized.

Part 2 - The jubilee

This year the 75th Hunger Games are coming up, which should be celebrated as an anniversary. That is why the tributes are chosen from among the winners of previous games. For Katniss this means, as the only female winner from District 12, that she has to go to the arena again. Haymitch is drawn as a male tribute, but Peeta volunteers to protect Katniss in the arena. However, this has the opposite goal, so she concludes an agreement with Haymitch, according to which this time they will both try - inside and outside - to save Peeta.

The procedure for the opening of the games from the first volume is repeated below. However, they hardly find allies among the other winners during training, as the two have very different ideas on this point. The organizers rate your chances of victory as almost certain. Those in charge hope that all tributes will pounce on Katniss and Peeta first in order to eliminate the greatest competition. In the last interview before the games, Peeta once again managed to pull the audience to his side when he claims that he and Katniss have long been married and that she is expecting a child from him.

Shortly before the start of the games the next day, Katniss watched on her way into the arena, as Cinna, who she staged as a symbol of the revolution - the bird called Mockingjay - is beaten half to death. However, it cannot do anything through the glass dome that encloses it and shortly afterwards it is already in the arena, a circular area that consists of water inside and is surrounded by a ring of land with dense jungle. As expected, the games turn out to be particularly brutal, not only because all tributes are very capable in their own way, but also because of the particularly frequent external dangers controlled by the playmakers. Peeta and Katniss join Finnick and Mags (an 80 year old woman). Mags dies in the first night from a "deadly fog" (poison gas cloud). The number of living tributes decreases rapidly due to external influences. The allies later join forces with Johanna Mason from District 7 and the two tributes from District 3, Beetee and Wiress. Wiress observes that the arena is like a clock and that every sector is haunted by a deadly danger for an hour. Later, Wiress is killed by Gloss from District 1. Katniss and Peeta survive as they are protected from most of the tributes. Especially Peeta seems to be under her protection, which gives Katniss hope that she will achieve her goal and Peeta can leave the arena as the winner.

Part 3 - The enemy

In the showdown, the tributes make use of the technical structure of the arena. With the help of Beetee's technical knowledge, Katniss finally manages to destroy the entire arena. It conducts electrical current into the force field that surrounds the arena and separates it from the outside world. As a result, it explodes and is completely destroyed.

She is rescued from the rubble by a hovercraft , which does not belong to the government, but to the independent people from the supposedly destroyed District 13. In fact, the residents only live in hiding as the district is in possession of nuclear weapons that are preventing the government from attacking. Inside are Haymitch, Beetee, Gale, Finnick and Plutarch Heavensbee, the new Supreme Playmaker, among others. Katniss learns of a long-standing, secret organization to overthrow the government. Despite this good news, Katniss is in despair as several tributes, including Peeta, have been captured by the Capitol. The book ends with Katniss' best friend, Gale, coming to see her and informing her that District 12 was bombed and destroyed but that he was able to save her family in time.

The arena from a bird's eye view

The third jubilee is celebrated in the second volume. The starting platforms of the tributes are surrounded by water. The cornucopia (which only contains weapons) lies on a sandbank in the middle of a large lake of salt water, from which paths radiate out to a beach that surrounds the lake. A jungle begins behind the beach. The arena is circular, two day's marches wide and divided into twelve parts, each of which carries a different danger. As the story progresses, the Tributes realize that the specific hazards in the parts of the arena are always activated at a specific time.
