The winged serpent is a documentary film of the DEFA -Studio for Animated Films Dresden by Lothar Barke from 1972. The film was made to celebrate the 500th birthday of Lucas Cranach the Elder .

The film takes museum visitors with buses to the most important sites for the preservation and care of the work of the great master in Meissen , Lutherstadt Wittenberg and Weimar and thus provides an insight into the life and work of the Renaissance painter. It presents important paintings and graphics from the GDR art collections that were signed with the winged snake.

The winged snake was shot by DEFA-Studio für Trickfilme Dresden in cooperation with the GDR Academy for Film and Television under the working title Lucas Cranach as a real film on ORWO- Color and had its premiere on September 1, 1972. The first broadcast on television took place on January 2, 1973 in the 2nd program of the television of the GDR . The dramaturgy was in the hands of Hedda Gehm .
