Diederick Schelfhout (born December 26, 1985 in Aalst ) is a Belgian cyclist who is active on track and road . He starts in paracycling class C3.
The accident
As a teenager, Diederick Schelfhout dreamed of becoming a professional cyclist. At the age of 22, he suffered a motorcycle accident in which the motorcycle and a car he crashed into exploded. He suffered third and fourth degree burns and numerous broken bones. He then spent ten weeks in a coma and six weeks in a specialty center for burn injuries. He was operated on 62 times in a year and a half.
Athletic career
Schelfhout soon began training on the handbike to improve the mobility of his arms. When he read in the newspaper about the Belgian Kris Bosmans , who had become paracycling world champion on the streets in 2011 , he decided to get active himself. To achieve this goal, he lost 40 kilograms within four months and started intensive training.
Diederick Schelfhout has been racing in cycling since February 2012. In 2013 he finished eleventh in the individual time trial and fifth in the road race at the UCI Paracycling Road World Championships , and he also became Belgian champion. At the UCI Paracycling World Championships in Aguascalientes in 2014 , he won a bronze medal in the single pursuit . The following year, at the UCI Paracycling World Track Championships in 2015 in Apeldoorn , he won the silver medal in the time trial .
In 2016 Schelfhout started at the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro and finished ninth in the single pursuit and twelfth in the time trial on the track and twelfth in the time trial on the road. In the street race he fell and couldn't finish it.
At the 2017 World Track Championships in Los Angeles the following year, he won the bronze medal in the time trial, and the 2018 World Track Championships won silver in the time trial and in the single pursuit . In 2019 he won bronze in time trial and pursuit at the World Railroad Championships .
