from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Diedrich Janßen , or Diedrich Janssen , Diedrich Janhsen and Diderich Janshen , as an artist mostly Diedrich Janßen-Jennelt (born October 22, 1889 in Groothusen , East Frisia ; † October 10, 1983 in Wilhelmshaven ) was a German painter and teacher. He was best known for his oil paintings with views from the East Frisian area and scenes of rural life.

Life

Diedrich Janßen came from a family of Krummhorn craftsmen. His father was the master blacksmith Hinderk Lammers Janßen, his mother was Teetje Janßen (née Rademaker), who came from the Dutch painters' family van de Velde. As a child Janßen often visited his mother's relatives in the Amsterdam area and saw works by Baroque painters and Vincent van Gogh . After the father's death, the family moved to Jennelt , which in later years led to the painter's name. From 1904 to 1907 Janßen completed a teacher training at the preparatory institute in Aurich . It was there that he began his artistic work, which in 1908 led to the first exhibition at a bookseller in Aurich. From 1910 to 1911 Janßen did his military service in Hanover and then taught as a drawing and gymnastics teacher on Borkum until 1914 . In 1914 he passed the entrance examination at the Berlin University of Fine Arts , but had to take part in the First World War from 1915 to 1918 . It was not until 1919 that he was able to continue his training at the university mentioned and at the pedagogical training school.

In 1923 Janßen moved to Borkum again, but was transferred to Wilhelmshaven that same year. During the Second World War Janßen served as the head of the civil air force command at Fort Schaar in Wilhelmshaven . From 1946 until his retirement in 1955, he worked again in the school service. From 1955 he devoted himself entirely to his artistic activity, which he continued until his eyesight waned in the 1970s. In the post-war period Janßen became involved in the Wilhelmshaven Association of Friends of Art . In the decades after 1945, the exhibitions of his works increased sharply. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, Janßen bequeathed around 350 works to the city of Wilhelmshaven.

Janssen had been married to the teacher Hertha Pfaffenroth since 1923. They both had two sons and a daughter together.
