The service medal of the military aviation ( it. Medaglia militare aeronautica ) was a service award of the Kingdom of Italy , which in three classes

  • in gold for 20 years of service (1st class)
  • in silver for 15 years of service and (2nd class)
  • in bronze for 10 years of service (3rd class)

by decree of Victor Emanuel III. was donated. It is still awarded today in the same class division, but with a different layout.

Appearance (1936)

The bronze , silver-plated or gold-plated medal shows the right-looking head portrait of the king on its obverse , surrounded by the inscription VITTORIO EMANUELLE III PE D´ITALIA . The lapel shows a closed laurel branch in the middle, on which the royal crown can be seen in the middle. Below is the eagle of the Italian Air Force. The laurel wreath is enclosed by the inscription MEDAGLIA MILITARE AERONAUTICA and a five-pointed star embossed in the middle on the lower edge of the medal.

Appearance (today)

The bronze, silver or gold-plated medal shows a winged head on its obverse, which is flanked by five eagle heads, all of which are directed to the right. A five-pointed star is depicted above the top eagle's head. The inscription LVNGA NAVIGAZIONE AEREA (... aviation) can be read in a semicircle underneath . The lapel shows the eagle of the Italian Air Force with a laurel branch in its claws and above it a shining five-pointed star. The horizontal inscription REPVBBLICA ITALIANA (Republic of Italy) can be read under the eagle .

Carrying method

The medal was and is worn as a ribbon medal on the upper left chest of the recipient on a light blue ribbon. The ribbon clip also shows the applied eagle of the Italian Air Force, which is bronze, silver or gold depending on the class awarded.
