The Diervilloideae are a subfamily in the honeysuckle plant family (Caprifoliaceae). It contains only two genera with around 16 species. The entire area of the subfamily is disjoint : on the one hand eastern Asia, on the other hand the southeastern USA. The name of the subfamily is derived from that of the genus Diervilla . The generic name honors the French doctor and botanist Marin Dières Sieur de Diéreville (1653-1738).

description

They are bushes . The opposite, stalked leaves have a simple leaf blade with a serrated leaf margin.

The hermaphrodite, five-fold flowers are zygomorphic . The five sepals and petals are each fused together. The five fertile stamens have hairy stamens. Two carpels, only one of which is fertile, have grown together to form a subordinate ovary. The stylus ends in a cephalic scar. There are fruit capsules formed.

Systematics

Molecular genetic research in the order of the cardiforms (Dipsacales) has led to the fact that the boundaries of the families of this order have been shifted since about 1998. Mal was divided and reclassified into several small families and now into one large family comprising many of the small families of the Caprifoliaceae s. l. According to APG III, the families Diervillaceae, Dipsacaceae, Linnaeaceae, Morinaceae and Valerianaceae, previously run as independent families, were incorporated into the Caprifoliaceae family and given the rank of Tribus.

The total areal of the subfamily is disjoint .

The subfamily Diervilloideae contains only two genera with about 16 species:

  • Diervilla Mill .: The three or so species are common in the southeastern United States.
  • Weigela ( Weigela Thunb. ): The ten to twelve species are common in northern East Asia.
