description

blossoms

The lovely weigela is an upright shrub with gray bark that is 2 to 3 meters high and rarely 4 meters high . Young twigs have two stripes of short, fine hair along the internodes . The winter buds are pointed with three to four scales and are often smooth. The leaves are sessile (sessile) or have a stalk up to 3 millimeters long. The leaf blade is simple, 5 to 10 centimeters long, oblong, elliptical or obovate-elliptical, long pointed, with a serrated edge and a broadly wedge-shaped to rounded base. The upper side of the leaf is sparse and more densely hairy along the leaf veins. The underside is densely downy to tomentose hairy.

The flowers grow axillary, singly or in groups of three to four in zymous inflorescences . The inflorescence axis and the flower stalks are glabrous to wire-haired. The calyx is about 2 centimeters wide. The calyx tube is narrow cylindrical, about 1 centimeter long and sparsely hairy downy. The calyx lobes are about 1 centimeter long and lanceolate. The corolla is funnel-shaped, bell-shaped, 3 to 4 inches long, 2 inches wide, pink to dark pink and sparsely hairy on the outside. The corolla lobes are spread out and are unevenly distributed and have a reddish inside. The stamens are shorter than the corolla, the anthers are yellow. The ovary is hairy and has a yellow-green gland at the top. The scar is bilobed. The fruit is 1.5 to 2.5 centimeters long, sparsely hairy capsules with a short beak. The seeds do not have wings. The lovely weigela flowers from April to August, the fruits ripen in October.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36.

distribution

The natural range is in the Chinese provinces Heilongjiang and Henan , in the north of Jiangsu , in Jilin , Liaoning , Shaanxi , in the north of Shandong , in Shanxi and in Inner Mongolia ; in Japan on Kyushu and in Korea . The lovely weigela grows in mixed forests and thickets at heights of 100 to 1500 meters on fresh to moist, weakly acidic to alkaline, nutrient-rich soils in sunny to light-shady locations. The species is frost hardy . It is assigned to winter hardiness zone 5b with mean annual minimum temperatures of −26.0 to −23.4 ° C (−15 to −10 ° F).

Systematics

The Liebliche Weigelie ( Weigela florida ) is a kind of the genus of Weigela ( Weigela ) in the family of Honeysuckle (Caprifoliaceae). There the genus is assigned to the subfamily Diervilloideae . The species was first scientifically described by Alexander von Bunge in 1835 as Calysphyrum floridum ( Basionym ) . Alphonse Pyrame de Candolle placed the species in the genus Weigela in 1839 . Calysphyrum is now used synonymously for Weigela . Further synonyms of the species are Weigela rosea Lindl. and Diervilla florida (Bunge) Siebold & Zucc. The generic name Weigela is reminiscent of Christian Ehrenfried Weigel (1746–1831), a German doctor, chemist and pharmacist who came from Stralsund , which was still in Sweden at the time , and who was also the Royal Swedish Personal Physician for a time. The specific epithet florida comes from Latin and means "richly blooming".
