Dieter Dangrieß

Dieter Dangrieß (born March 24, 1940 in Jahnshain ) is a former major general of the Ministry for State Security (MfS) of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). From 1988 to 1989 he was the district administration manager of the MfS in Gera .

Life

Dangrieß, son of a worker, went to the MfS after graduating from high school in 1958 and was hired in the district office in Glauchau . In the same year he joined the Socialist Unity Party of Germany (SED).

In 1961/62 he completed a one-year course at the MfS University (JHS) in Potsdam-Eiche . In 1965 he was transferred to Department II, responsible for counter-espionage . In 1966 he moved to the Guidance and Control Department of the Karl-Marx-Stadt district administration of the MfS.

From 1967 to 1972 Dangrieß completed a distance learning course at JHS and became a qualified lawyer . From 1973 he was head of the work group guidance and control in the MfS Karl-Marx-Stadt and from 1982 officer for special tasks and head of the staff, then deputy head of the district administration Karl-Marx-Stadt.

In 1987 Dangrieß received his doctorate and in 1988, as successor to Dieter Lehmann, head of the Gera district administration. During a meeting with the Minister for State Security on August 31, 1989 in Berlin, Erich Mielke asked : “Is it the case that June 17th will break out tomorrow ?” Colonel Dieter Dangrieß replied: “It won't be tomorrow, it won't take place, that's why we're there too. ”A few weeks later, on October 2, 1989, Dangrieß was appointed major general as the last colonel in the MfS. On December 7, 1989, he was released from his last position as head of the Office for National Security of the Gera district and replaced by Lieutenant Colonel Michael Trostorff. After the fall of the Berlin Wall and the peaceful revolution in the GDR , Dangrieß was dismissed from service in February 1990.
