Dieter Hoff (musician)

Dieter Hoff (born October 7, 1953 in Cologne ; † October 2019 there ) was a German musician (drums, percussion , piano, synthesizer), composer , music producer , publisher and lyricist .

Life

Hoff grew up in simple circumstances with his grandparents. As a teenager he got to know Purple Schulz ; Both founded the regionally known avant-garde rock band D'Accord in 1972, in which Hoff made his first stage appearances as a percussionist and vibraphonist. After various professional activities, including editing at the Kölner Stadtanzeiger , he decided in 1976 to work as a professional musician.

Hoff became known through his participation in the German band "Neue Heimat", from which the later formation Purple Schulz arose. The titles Kleine Seen and Verliebte Jungs became known , placed in the top ten of the German charts and for which he wrote the lyrics.

Text works for Peter Maffay , Anne Haigis , Milva , Wolfgang Petry , Bläck Fööss , Höhner and other artists followed.

In 1983 the band Purple Schulz released the album Hautnah with the three founding members Josef Piek, Dieter Hoff and Purple Schulz . The title Sehnsucht sprang from this album, which provided the band's musical breakthrough.

As a result, the albums Verliebte Jungs ( gold record ) and State of things , as well as the compilation Die Singles 1984-1992 (gold record) appeared.

Hoff performed live with the band Purple Schulz at the Rockpalast , in 1986 at the Anti-WAAhnsinns Festival in Wackersdorf, on six tours through Germany, a live TV appearance in the Dortmund Westfalenhalle and on the ZDF hit parade .

Hoff left the band in 1987 and worked from then on as a solo artist. This was followed by two single releases: Fahr ich in die Stadt (1987), with which he was seen on the TV show Formula One , and the title Lieber mit dir (1988), both of which were released by the record company CBS .

In 1990 his first solo album, Wer ist hier crazy , was released on BMG Records. At the same time he founded the edition “Schallhaus Musikverlag”.

Together with Harry Weitz, Hoff wrote the text for Wolfgang Petrys Du bist ein Wunder , which reached number 78 in the charts in Germany in 1992. In 1994 the title Dä kleine blöde Willi appeared under his name in Cologne dialect at Clodwig / BMG.

From 1994 to the beginning of 1997 a longer stay in East Africa followed. During this time Hoff mostly stayed in Nairobi (Kenya), where he attended the university there as a guest auditor and met numerous musicians.

Inspired by the tribal beats of African folk music, he founded the techno / electronics label "Tonsport" in 1999. There he published u. a. Artists like Gabriel Ananda and Frank Köllges . His own tracks were also released on Tonsport under the name "Freitag". The label brought it to a total of 24 vinyl 12-inch maxis and 3 CDs.

Hoff lived and lived in the Cologne-Ehrenfeld district .
