Dieter Mahncke

Dieter Mahncke (* 1941 in Namibia ) is a German political scientist . He is a professor emeritus at the College of Europe in Bruges and Warsaw (holder of the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen and Halbach Chair for European Foreign and Security Policy) and the author of numerous books and articles on German foreign policy, disarmament , European security, and German -american relations and with South Africa .

Life

Mahncke was born to German parents in Namibia and grew up there. He first studied at the University of Cape Town , but then moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where he graduated in 1962 with a bachelor's degree in political science . At the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University , he received his master’s degree in 1964 and his doctorate there in 1968. From 1969 to 1974 he was a research fellow at the research institute of the German Society for Foreign Policy . In 1974 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bonn . He was a lecturer at the University of Mainz from 1969 to 1972 and at the University of Bonn (1973–74), professor of political science at the universities of the Bundeswehr in Munich (1973) and Hamburg (1975–1980). From 1977 to 1978 he was Vice President there.

Dieter Mahncke was head of the speechwriting staff of the Federal President from 1980 to 1985, then deputy head of the planning staff in the Ministry of Defense until 1996. He then taught until his retirement in 2010 as professor for European foreign and security policy at the College of Europe. Until 2008 he headed the Department of Political and Administrative Sciences; from 2006 to 2010 he was founding director of the Department of EU International Relations and Diplomacy Studies. He held visiting professorships in Halle , Antwerp, Sofia, Bangkok and in the USA (Dartmouth, Duke, Middlebury, University of North Carolina).
