Dieter Schinzer (born July 7, 1953 in Gudensberg ) is a German chemist at the Otto von Guericke University Magdeburg . He is best known for a number of first published total syntheses , particularly epothilones .

Life

Schinzer studied chemistry from 1974 to 1977 at the Philipps University of Marburg and obtained a doctorate in 1980 from Manfred T. Reetz at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn with the thesis Preparative and Mechanistic Aspects of Hydride Elimination from Carbanions ( Dr. rer. Nat. ). As a postdoctoral fellow , Schinzer worked with a Feodor Lynen grant from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation with Clayton H. Heathcock at the University of California, Berkeley and with a Liebig grant from the Fonds der Chemischen Industrie with Ekkehard Winterfeldt at the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz University in Hanover , where he also completed his habilitation in 1986 . Also in 1986 he received a medal of honor from the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation for young scientists.

With the support of the Heisenberg program , Schinzer initially continued to work at the University of Hanover before he held an interim professorship at the Georg-August University in Göttingen in 1989/90 . Schinzer was a visiting professor at the University of Wisconsin – Madison before he was appointed professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig in 1990 . In 1996 Schinzer was offered a professorship at the Otto von Guericke University in Magdeburg . In 2001 he turned down an offer at the University of Oslo .

Since 2002 Schinzer was the head of the company MOLISA (Molecular Links Sachsen-Anhalt) based in Magdeburg , which was dissolved in 2012 in bankruptcy. From 2002 to 2005 he was also dean of the faculty for process and systems engineering at the University of Magdeburg. Schinzer was and is active in numerous committees of the European science organization COST .

Schinzer is primarily concerned with the total synthesis of biologically active natural substances , with drug design and the relationship between chemical structure and the function of molecules. Along with Samuel Danishefsky and Kyriacos Costa Nicolaou , Schinzer was one of the first to achieve a total synthesis of an epothilone .
