Dieter Schmidt (ophthalmologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dieter Schmidt (born June 1, 1939 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a German ophthalmologist .

Life

Dieter Schmidt studied human medicine at the University of Mainz (1959–1961) and at the University of Freiburg (1961–1964). After completing the medical state examination, from 1965 to 1966 he worked for two years as a medical assistant in the following hospitals: Bad Kreuznach (ophthalmology), Tuttlingen (surgery), Offenburg (internal medicine), Karlsruhe-Rüppurr (gynecology & obstetrics), Freiburg (neurology). His dissertation was entitled: About the electrocardiogram with pressure on the left ventricle, illustrated using the example of aortic stenosis and aortic stenosis (1965). This was followed by the American ECFMG exam in Frankfurt am Main (1965). After obtaining his license to practice medicine in 1966, he worked as an assistant doctor at the Neurological University Clinic with Neurophysiology in Freiburg (1966–1967), then as an assistant doctor at the Ophthalmology Clinic in Freiburg (1967–1975). The specialist recognition took place in 1971. He received the venia legendi for the subject ophthalmology after his habilitation in 1974. The habilitation thesis was Congenital eye muscle paresis. Electronystagmographic and electromyographic examinations . From 1977 to 1978 he received a grant from the German Research Foundation as a “Research Fellow” at the “University of Miami”, Florida. In 1980 he was appointed university professor. His activity as senior physician at the clinic lasted from 1973 to 2004.

In 1999 he and M. Schumacher received the “Eleonore and Fritz Hodeige Prize for Innovative, Successful Medical Therapies” from the University Hospital of Freiburg.

Scientific work

Interdisciplinary cooperation with representatives from other medical disciplines has always been a concern of Dieter Schmidt. This resulted in joint work with colleagues in the neurological clinics of the Medical University Clinic of the University Children's Clinic (2008 monograph: "Photophobia in eye diseases in childhood and adolescence") and the University Institute for Anatomy. In the 1970s, Dieter Schmidt dealt with the diagnosis and therapy of congenital and acquired movement disorders of the eye (motility disorders with diplopia , saccadic movement disorders , or observations in nystagmus forms ). Further investigations into eye muscle paresis were continued in Miami from 1977 to 1978 and published in 1979/1980. The scientific focus in the 1980s was on circulatory disorders of the eye, in particular arterial retinal diseases, also in connection with general diseases and with extra- and intracerebral vascular disorders. Laser treatments of retinal vascular and tumor-related diseases were carried out: therapy of diabetic retinopathy and angiomas of the retina. Work on retinal diseases was one of his research tasks. Schmidt dealt with immunologically induced diseases, e.g. B. Myasthenia gravis and temporal arteritis Horton For Dieter Schmidt, diagnosis and treatment of eye changes in von Hippel-Lindau syndrome represented a special challenge, as there was close cooperation between the Medical University Clinic (Prof. Hartmut Neumann) and the University Eye Clinic Freiburg for diagnosis and therapy of the disease of the v. Hippel-Linau syndrome exists. In the field of neuroophthalmology , Schmidt wrote the book contributions “Inferior Hemianopia in Parasellar and Pituitary Tumors” (together with K. Bührmann); "Eye lesions in traumatic brain injuries" (2007); “Neuroophthalmological Findings in Traumatic Brain Injuries” (2007). Dieter Schmidt also dealt with eye changes in syndromes and unusual diseases. Work (also in cooperation with the Anatomical Institute Freiburg) concerned the vascular course of the orbit , the retina and the skull. In the 21st century, Schmidt was increasingly concerned with the history of medicine and is a committed member of the Julius Hirschberg Society .

Publications

By the beginning of 2015, Schmidt had published 247 papers on ophthalmology. (Original articles: 161, of which 123 were first author; reviews and letters to editors: 60; book chapters or monographs: 26).
