Diether Roeder von Diersburg (1882–1918)

Baron Diether Roeder von Diersburg (* December 20, 1882 in Potsdam , † July 10, 1918 in the North Sea ) was a German naval officer in the Imperial Navy .

Life

Kapitänleutnant Roeder was in command of the torpedo boat S 66 and chief of the 13th torpedo boat semi-flotilla. Backed by heavy naval forces and with airship reconnaissance, the semi-flotilla went to sea on July 10, 1918 to secure the 7th escort semi-flotilla, which consisted of former fish steamers, during a mine control stab in the North Sea. In the evening, its half-flotilla came to the position 54 ° 47 '  N , 4 ° 52'  O in a minefield . The torpedo boat S 62 was hit by a mine and sank very quickly, killing 27 of its crew . Instead of turning off, Roeder had his guide boat S 66 anchored immediately and launched the motor dinghy to rescue survivors. Soon afterwards, S 66 also received a mine hit that tore the boat apart. Roeder and 75 men of his crew were killed.

Roeder's grave is in the “Vang Kirke” cemetery in Thisted commune on Vendsyssel-Thy in North Jutland, Denmark .

Honor

In 1937, the Kriegsmarine named the type ship of its class destroyer 1936 , the destroyer Z 17 Diether von Roeder , after him.
