Butyl diglycol (systematic: 2- (2-butoxyethoxy) ethanol ) is a poorly volatile (i.e. high boiling point) clear liquid with a very faint odor. It is used as a solvent for paints and varnishes, in the chemical industry, in household cleaning agents, industrial chemicals and in textile processing. The substance also serves as a starting material for chemical syntheses .

It is made from n -butanol with ethylene oxide . In 2003, Dow Chemical produced 53,000 tons.

Others

In 2014, Exxon announced that butyl diglycol, together with choline chloride, is the basis of its fracking liquid, which it claims to be environmentally friendly and the dosage used is harmless to humans .
