Diethylmalonic acid diethyl ester is a derivative of malonic acid . It belongs to the class of the esters .
Extraction and presentation
Diethylmalonic acid diethyl ester is produced from malonic acid diethyl ester and ethyl bromide by the so-called malonic ester synthesis . Two moles of ethyl bromide are used per mole of diethyl malonate. Sodium ethanolate is used as the base .
properties
Diethylmalonic acid diethyl ester can be condensed with urea to give cyclic compounds . It is a preliminary stage in the production of barbital , a sleeping aid in the group of barbiturates .
