The 1966 diploma was followed by a doctorate in 1969 on ESR studies on triplet excitons in anthracene and naphthalene single crystals . He then went to the research department of the computer manufacturer IBM in San José (United States) as a postdoctoral fellow in 1970 . He did not return to Germany until 1980 when he was offered the chair for experimental physics at the University of Bayreuth . There he is considered to be one of the founding fathers of the Faculty of Applied Sciences.

From 1989 to 2001 he was a member of the scientific and technical advisory board of the Bavarian State Government; in 1990 and 1991 he was a member of a perspective commission for the nuclear research center in Karlsruhe that was convened by the Federal Research Minister .
