Dietrich Herm (born January 18, 1933 in São Paulo ) is a German geologist and paleontologist .

Life

Herm was born in Brazil, but grew up in Germany and studied biology and geology at the University of Hamburg and the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich , where he received his doctorate in 1960. From 1963 to 1966 he was a professor at the Universidad de Chile (during this time he undertook field studies all over Chile) and from 1969 at the University of Tübingen . From 1977, he was Richard Dehm's successor Professor of Paleontology and Historical Geology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and head of the State Paleontological Collection . Later he was general director of the Bavarian State Natural Science Collections . In 1998 he retired .

He deals with the marine Pleistocene and Pliocene in South America, Africa and the Mediterranean region (especially micropalaeontology ) and from the 1980s especially with the formation of the Alps (especially the northern limestone Alps ) and paleo biogeography of the Cretaceous period .

In 1960 he received the Hermann Credner Prize . In 2000 he became an honorary member of the Paleontological Society . He is a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences .
