Dietrich Küchemann (born September 11, 1911 in Göttingen , † February 23, 1976 in Farnham , Great Britain ), was a German-British engineer .

Life

Dietrich Küchemann studied mathematics , physics and fluid mechanics in Göttingen and Munich and, after completing his doctorate in 1936 ( perturbation movements in a gas flow with boundary layer ), worked with Albert Betz at the Göttingen Aerodynamic Research Institute, among other things on the aerodynamics of the biplane. In 1942 he developed the so-called power wing concept, which was taken up after the end of the war as a "tilt rotor aircraft" by the United Flight Technical Works in Bremen . He was mainly concerned with the aerodynamics of radiators and engine intakes - partly together with his colleague Johanna Weber . Küchemann was 1,947 employees of the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE) in Farnborough and went after his naturalization to the Head of Division Supersonic (1957) and Head of Aerodynamics Department (1966) on; In 1971 he became a professor at Imperial College in London . At the RAE, his research focused on the swept wing for high subsonic speeds, the slender wing for supersonic speeds and the “wave rider” concept for aircraft at hyper speeds. Küchemann played a key role - again with his colleague Johanna Weber - in the plans for the British-French " Concorde " and headed the "Fluid Dynamics Panel" and the "Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development".

In 1964 he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE).
