Dietrich Pohl

Dietrich Fritz Reinhold Pohl (born August 15, 1959 in Lübeck ) is a German diplomat who was ambassador to Burkina Faso from 2014 to 2017 and has been ambassador to Mali since 2019 .

Life and education

After graduating from high school in Lübeck in 1978 and completing his military service in the Bundeswehr in 1979, Pohl began studying law and oriental studies at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel , which he completed in 1987 with the first state examination. He then completed postgraduate studies in law and oriental studies from 1984 to 1987 at the University of Oxford . In 1987 he completed his doctorate as Dr. jur. at Saarland University with a dissertation on Islam and the international law of peace. The dogmatic foundations of the participation of an Islamic state in the modern system of international law using the example of Egypt . At the same time, he also completed a doctorate in 1987. phil. from the University of Oxford.

career

In 1988 Pohl began the preparatory service for the higher foreign service and after completing it, worked initially in the Foreign Office between 1990 and 1991 and then from 1991 to 1994 at the embassy in Egypt . He then acted as permanent representative of the ambassador in Macedonia between 1994 and 1997 and, after a renewed assignment in the Foreign Office, worked at the embassy in Ethiopia from 1999 to 2003 . From 2003 to 2006 he was deputy head of department in the Foreign Office.

Thereupon Pohl was first head of the economic service at the embassy in Iran between 2006 and 2007 and then from 2007 to 2009 permanent representative of the ambassador in Iran. After being a consultant for the Science and Politics Foundation (SWP) and the Federal Academy for Security Policy (BAKS) from 2009 to 2010 , he was Head of Division in the Foreign Office between 2010 and 2012. He then held a professorship for diplomacy at the German-speaking Andrássy University Budapest (AUB) from 2012 to 2014 and was also dean of the Faculty of International Relations there. From 2014 to 2017, Pohl was the successor to the retired Christian Germann Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Burkina Faso . From 2017 to 2019 he was Consul General at the German Embassy in Moscow, and since 2019 Pohl has been Ambassador to Mali .
