Dietwin (Liège)
Dietwin (also Theodwin , lat. Theoduinus , nl. Diederik van Beieren , fr. Théoduin de Bavière ) († June 23, 1075 ) was bishop of Liège from 1048 until his death .
Life
He came from a Bavarian noble family and was probably with Heinrich III. related. From this he was also made Bishop of Liège. Dietwin was able to quickly gain recognition in his sphere of influence and was subsequently on the side of the empire. In the conflicts with the neighboring princes, for example against Dietrich von Holland or Gottfried the Bearded of Lorraine , he was sometimes at the head of his troops himself.
With his loyalty to the king he caused indignation in Gregory VII. The Countess Richilde of Hainault gave him 1071 their allodial to feud when the bishop from the king for help against Robert of Flanders would get. Dietwin had to pay a considerable sum of money for the property. A short time later, Heinrich IV also transferred the imperial fiefs to the Lüticher church, with the proviso that they were handed over to Duke Gottfried of Lower Lorraine, who in turn handed them over to Richilde and her son as an after-fief . Because of his loyalty, Heinrich IV. Dietwin entrusted Queen Berta for protection during the campaign against the Saxons .
In 1066 he issued a privilege for the city of Huy , in which regulations were probably made for the first time on the position of immigrant unfree people in a city. Among other things, he sponsored the cathedral school in Liège in his diocese. Like his predecessor Wazo, he supported the chronicler Anselm. At that time, Friedrich von Lothringen (later Pope Stephan IX ) and Hermann (later Bishop of Metz) were members of the cathedral chapter.
A letter from him to Bishop Imad of Paderborn ( Epistola ad Imadum episcopum Paderbornensem ) has survived . In this he reports on the history of the Stablo and Malmedy monasteries .
After his death he was buried in the Notre Dame church in Huy.
