The department is located in the Manga countryside in the south-east of the country and borders Nigeria . It consists of the urban parish Diffa and the rural parishes of Chétimari and Gueskérou . The eponymous capital of the department is Diffa.

history

In 1964, an administrative reform divided Niger into seven departments, the predecessors of the later regions, and 32 arrondissements, the predecessors of the later departments. While all other arrondissements went back territorially to earlier administrative units, the Arrondissement Diffa was a completely new establishment. Diffa received the canton Chétimari from Maïné-Soroa and the canton Komadougou from N'Guigmi .

In 1998 the previous Arrondissements of Nigers were converted into departments, each headed by a prefect appointed by the Council of Ministers. The department has been divided into municipalities since 2002. Before that, it consisted of the urban center Diffa and the cantons of Bosso, Chétimari and Komadougou. In 2011 Bosso was separated from the Diffa department as a separate department.
