Gueskérou is a rural municipality in the Diffa department in Niger .

geography

Gueskérou is located in the south of the department in the Manga landscape in the Sahel . The town center is located directly on the Komadougou Yobé River , which forms the state border with Nigeria here. Immediately southwest of Gueskérou is the regional capital Diffa . The other neighboring communities in Niger are Kabléwa in the north, Toumour in the east, Bosso in the southeast and Chétimari in the northwest. Due to its location on the river, several gardens extend around the center of the village, in an otherwise mostly dry municipality area. In the north lies the Kadzell clay plain . Gueskérou consists of 61 traditional villages, 59 administrative villages, two camps and 22 water points. The main town of the rural municipality is Gueskérou, consisting of the administrative villages Gueskérou I and Gueskérou II.

history

In 1933, Gueskérou became the capital of the newly created canton of Komadougou. During the administrative reform of 2002, all cantons of Niger were dissolved and Gueskérou has since then had the status of a rural community ( French : commune rurale ). At least 38 civilians were killed in an attack by the Islamist group Boko Haram from Nigeria on the villages of Lamana and N'Goumao in June 2015.

population

At the 2001 census, Gueskérou had 28,948 inhabitants. At the 2012 census, the population was 37,836.

Economy and Infrastructure

In the south on Komadougou Yobé, irrigation farming is practiced. In the north begins the zone of agropastoralism . In between, rain-fed agriculture predominates. There is a cattle market in the village of Kindjandi. The market day is Friday. National road 1 runs through the municipality .
