Digital picture frames are liquid crystal displays in the form of a picture frame that can store and display digital images independently of a computer . For data exchange, they are equipped with a USB connection, a memory card reader or other connections.

The digital picture frame became popular in the early 2000s after the falling manufacturing costs of (technically related) LCD and TFT monitors made it marketable.

Types

A digital photo frame consists mainly of a TFT - screen and a processing unit for converting the data, and a memory card reader . The mains and / or battery-operated device usually receives its data from a memory card , via network ( cable / WLAN ), Bluetooth or via an Internet connection .

Sizes

Commercially available models have a screen diagonal of 7 to 10.4 inches (18 to 26 cm). There are also mini desktop versions with, for example, 1.8 ", 2.4" and 3.5 "(approx. 5 to 10 cm), as well as key rings with approx. 1.1" and 1.5 "(2.5 up to 3 cm).

Functions

Digital photo frames are divided into three broad categories:

  1. Simple digital photo frames
  2. Simple digital "multimedia" picture frames
  3. Improved "multimedia" digital picture frames

The picture frames in the first category can really only display pictures (in JPEG format ), but many models offer the option to display the pictures in a timed manner. Multimedia picture frames can also play music and videos. Some models of the last category can also connect to the Internet to establish, where images of RSS - Web feeds , e-mails or photo sharing pages, such as Flickr or Picasa load. Many of these models also have the option of wirelessly exchanging images (mostly via Bluetooth ). There are also models with DVB-T receivers on the market, which can also be used as mini TVs .

Sometimes the coloring can be manipulated, e.g. B. blue cast, or there are zoom functions available.

Due to the increasingly flexible functionalities, creative ideas also arise how the devices can be used for completely different purposes, for example as a display for an embedded system .
