Dijit Singh Rana, Baron Rana MBE JP (born September 20, 1938 in Sangol , Punjab , India ) is a British entrepreneur and politician from India who has been a life peer member of the House of Lords since 2004 .

Life

After immigrating from India, Rana settled in England in 1963 and then in Northern Ireland in 1966 , where he founded Andras House Ltd , a property, house and restaurant development company , and has been its managing director ever since. In the mid-1980s, he began his further social and economic commitment, was the founder of the Indian Economic Forum in 1985 and was also appointed justice of the peace in 1986. From 1990 to 1994 he was a director of Lagan College and from 1991 to 1992 President of the Belfast Chamber of Commerce and Industry .

Rana, who became a member of the Order of the British Empire in 1996 and founded his own charity with the Rana Charitable Trust , has been chairman of the Thanksgiving Square Belfast charity since 2002 and received an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster in 1999 and another from Queen's University Belfast in 2004 .

By a letters patent dated June 16, 2004, Rana was raised to the nobility as a life peer with the title Baron Rana , of Malone in the County of Antrim . Shortly thereafter took place on 30 June 2004 its introduction ( Introduction ) as a member of the House of Lords . In the upper house he belongs to the group of so-called crossbenchers .

He has been Indian Honorary Consul in Northern Ireland since 2004 and was also President of the Northern Irish Chamber of Commerce and Industry between 2004 and 2005. After serving as Executive Vice President from 2004 to 2009, he has also served as President of the Global Organization for People of Indian Origin (GOPIO ) since 2009 and was awarded the Indian Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Prize for his services in 2007 the Indian interests in the diaspora honored.
