Dimitri Usnadze

Dimitri Usnadze ( Georgian დიმიტრი უზნაძე ; * December 2, 1886 in Sakara, Sestaponi district , Imeretia ; † October 9, 1950 in Tbilisi ) was a Georgian psychologist . He was a professor and co-founder of the Tbilisi State University and the Georgian Academy of Sciences .

He came from a Georgian noble family. In 1904 he passed the Abitur at the Georgian Gymnasium in Kutaisi . In 1909 he completed his studies at the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Leipzig . In the same year he did his doctorate at the University of Halle-Wittenberg in Halle (Saale) on the epistemology of Vladimir S. Solovyov.

From 1910 to 1917 Usnadze taught world history at the grammar school in Kutaisi. In 1918 he was a co-founder of the Tbilisi State University . From 1918 to 1950 he was professor and dean of the Psychological Faculty of the University of Tbilisi. In 1941 he co-founded the Georgian Academy of Sciences and was the first director of the Institute of Psychology that was later named after him until 1950 .

Usnadze was mainly concerned with philosophy , the history of philosophy , linguistic psychology , educational theory and experimental pedagogy , formulated the theory of unconscious mental attitudes . He wrote his scientific work in German and Russian. Mainly because of his early contributions to language psychology and attitude and set theory, he is considered the most important Georgian exponent of gestalt theory .
