The Dimitrios was a coaster that ran aground on December 23, 1981 on the beach in Valtaki ( Evrotas municipality ). It is a popular photo opportunity because of its location on the beach.
history
The Dimitrios was built on January 23, 1950 as Klintholm for the Danish state shipping company DFDS on Frederikshavn Værft and put into service.
The Klintholm was mainly used by DFDS on the trade between Copenhagen and Antwerp . In 1965 the Klintholm was sold to Greece and renamed Dimitrios . Another sale took place in 1979 and the ship was renamed Cornilia . The new owner was Anepap Ltd.
Ship description
The Dimitrios was a coaster with a 15 t boom and six 3 t booms and six winches . The ship had three holds
- Cargo space 1–6.10 meters long and 5.40 meters wide
- Load compartment 2–6.70 meters long and 4.70 meters wide
- Cargo area 3–11.90 meters long and 4.70 meters wide
The volume of the hold was 1950 m³ for bulk goods and 1803 m³ for general cargo. The ship's carrying capacity was 1220 t. The ship was 66.7 m long and 10.08 m wide, the maximum draft was 4.45 m. It was measured with 965 GT and 466 NRZ . The crew was nine seamen, and there were two cabins for passengers.
The ship's propulsion system consisted of an Atlas Polar five-cylinder two-stroke diesel engine . The engine of the type M45M (1D 2SA) had an output of 580 hp. It drove a propeller with a fixed pitch and gave the ship a speed of 10 knots .
Stranding
On December 4, 1980 the Cornilia was in the port of Gythio when her captain urgently needed to be hospitalized. While the captain was in hospital, the ship was chained and was in port until June 1981. In June 1981 the port authorities in Gythio decided to take the ship to the roadstead in front of the port. In a storm on December 23, 1981, the ship broke loose and ran aground on the beach of Valtaki. The name Cornilia faded and today the ship is known under the previous name Dimitrios .
The wreck is still at position 36 ° 47 ′ 20 ″ N , 22 ° 35 ′ 9 ″ E.
