Dimtrios Filippotis ( Greek Δημήτριος Φιλιππότης , * 1839 in Pyrgos on Tinos ; † November 28, 1919 in Athens ; also transcribed Demetrios Philippotes ) was an important Greek sculptor of the 19th century .

Life and works

Dimitrios Zacharias Filippotis, like Giannoulis Chalepas , came from a family of sculptors from the town of Pyrgos on Tinos. His father, Master Zacharias, was a sculptor and architect . He was Filippoti's first teacher in sculpture. As a young man he helped his father build the monastery of St. Paul on Mount Athos . Later he worked with other sculptors from Tinos in the production of sculptures in Constantinople .

In 1855 Filippotis began studying sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts . His professor there was Christian Heinrich Siegel (1808-1883). During this time Filippotis was awarded a scholarship from the Greek King George I , which enabled him to study abroad. Filippotis continued his studies in Italy . It was there that he created his sculpture Harvest , which was awarded the first prize of the Rome Academy in 1870 .

After returning to Greece, he mainly worked in Athens. He had a significant artistic influence in the process. Filippoti's works are assigned to classicism. He was often inspired by scenes from everyday life. Masterpieces such as Der Holzbrecher ( Ξυλοθράυστης ) were created, which are characterized by anatomical details and impress with their dynamism and grace . Other well-known works by the artist are: Child with Grapes , Little Fisherman , The Fruit Trader , Artemis with Dog .

Filippoti's works can be found, besides in Greek museums, also in the honor cemetery of Athens , in the cemetery of Piraeus , as well as in churches and on squares in other cities of Greece.

Descendants of the Filippotis family continue the family tradition of sculpture to this day.
