The Diogenes Quartet is a string quartet founded in 1998 and based in Munich . The ensemble includes Stefan Kirpal ( violin ), Gundula Kirpal (violin), Alba González i Becerra ( viola ) and Stephen Ristau ( violoncello ).

history

The quartet received important impulses in its artistic development from members of the Amadeus Quartet and the LaSalle Quartet, among others .

Thanks to its own concert series “Rückblicke” in Munich's Gasteig (2000–2008), it acquired a broad repertoire at an early stage and, in addition to the usual literature, also developed works by unknown or forgotten composers.

In the last few years the Quartet v. a. made a name for himself with the complete recordings of all string quartets by Franz Schubert and Max Bruch . The latter contains the string quartet in C minor (1852), believed to have been lost and rediscovered in 2013, which was premiered by the four musicians a year later in Frankfurt .

In addition to their regular concert activities, the quartet is dedicated to music education in the form of chamber music workshops and so-called workshop concerts, which offer children and young people the opportunity to encounter classical music. The musicians have been involved as ambassadors for SOS Children's Villages since 2015 .

The Diogenes Quartet is a founding member of the Association of German String Quartets (VDSQ), which was established in March 2012.

The quartet owes its name to the long friendship with Rudolph C. Bettschart , co-owner of the Swiss publishing house Diogenes , who died in 2015 .
