Dionysia is a genus of plants in the primrose family (Primulaceae).

description

Habitus of Dionysia tapetodes

Vegetative characteristics

Dionysia species grow as subshrubs with a woody base. They form loose pillows and bushes or thick cushions . The shoot axes are branched. In some species, leaf whorls are formed at the nodes . Most of the time, however, the leaves form terminal rosettes . The leaves are very differently developed, from tiny to primrose-like, mostly alternate to clustered. In some species two different leaf types are formed: those on the flowering shoots are smaller and strongly revolute, those on the vegetative shoots are larger and flat.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from January to May. The inflorescence can vary greatly in the individual species. It is either long-shafted with several whorls or short-shafted with just one whorl or a single flower. The hermaphrodite flowers are five-fold with a double flower envelope . There are five sepals . The five petals are often fused with a long corolla tube. The capsule fruit contains one to four seeds.

Distribution and systematics

The genus name Dionysia was established by Eduard Fenzl . The generic name Dionysia is derived from the Greek god of wine, Dionysus . According to molecular genetic research, the species of the genus Dionysia belong to the genus Primula so that it is monophyletic. But this is controversial.

The genus Dionysia contains about 41 species that are native to Turkey , Iran , Afghanistan , West Pakistan , Tajikistan and Oman :
