Diploma in English

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The university degree Diplom-Anglist / in ( Dipl.-Angl. ) Or also Diplom-Wirtschaftsanglist / in was awarded in Germany from the late 1970s by selected universities after a standard study period of four to five years as an academic degree to graduates of the interdisciplinary diploma course Diplom- English studies awarded. The course consisted of the core subject of English literature and / or linguistics as well as the subject of economics (either business administration or economics ). In this respect, the economics-oriented Diplom-Anglistik differs from the purely literary, linguistic and possibly cultural studies English in the (former) Magister or teacher training courses . Like most diploma courses, the diploma in English was converted into other types of courses by the universities in the course of the Bologna Process at the latest by the end of the 2000s.

History of the course

Similarly, most universities also offered the diploma course for students of Romance studies or Slavic studies in connection with economics. At the University of Kassel , for example, the degree course in English and Romance studies was introduced in 1979 in order to lead “as a humanities-oriented degree program to a professional qualification for areas of activity outside of school”. As of 1991, the University of Mannheim was able to combine the core subjects of English, Romance, Slavic and Japanese studies with economics as part of the diploma course in Philology with an economics qualification .

The degree of Diplom (Business) Anglist entitles, like all university diploma courses, to a doctorate subject to compliance with certain requirements (for example, usually a minimum grade of "good") . As part of the changeover to Bachelor and Master degrees, the Diplom-Anglist degree , like most diploma degrees, has been gradually abolished at German universities as part of the Bologna Process since the end of the 2000s at the latest . For example, the University of Mannheim has been awarding the degree of Master of Arts with the addition of " Culture and Business English / American Studies " as a second professional degree since 2006, instead of the degree of Diplom-Anglist , for which a previous university degree, e.g. as part of a Bachelor's degree, is necessary.

Entry requirement

A degree in English at a German university required at least a subject-specific university entrance qualification . Many universities had restricted admission to the course ; some universities carried out their own selection procedures to check the linguistic qualifications of applicants.

Structure of the course

The standard period of study was eight to ten semesters , depending on the university . The degree course in English was divided into basic and main courses: the basic course generally lasted four semesters and was completed with the preliminary diploma; the main course usually lasted another four to six semesters, included a diploma thesis and ended with a diploma. A semester abroad in an English-speaking area and, if necessary, proof of practical work experience during the course were either recommended or required, depending on the examination regulations.

The basic course , like the main course, consisted of the core area of English and economics, whereby the students had to choose between business administration and economics at the beginning of their studies. Depending on the university, the courses of study were modularized and the students could thus design their course of study according to the examination regulations themselves, or the university specified the sequence of the examinations to be presented.
