Diplomatic stairs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The diplomatic staircase is a precast concrete staircase built near Reitwein in the Märkisch-Oderland district ( Lebus district ) on the west side of the Oder dike between dike kilometers 6.5 and 6.6 .

It was erected in 1984/1985 on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the liberation near the point where the 8th Guards Army of the Red Army under General Vasily Chuikov crossed the Oder on February 2, 1945 . This was one of the preparatory actions for the Battle of the Seelower Heights at the end of World War II .

The aim of building the stairs was to make it easier for the ambassador of 40 diplomatic missions in the GDR who had come to attend the celebrations to climb the Oder dike and thus to make it easier to see over the Oder towards the east.

Diplomatic stairs in front of the new dike

In the course of the dike renovation from 1998 to 2005 after the Oder flood in 1997 , a new staircase was built instead of the old one.

Thanks to the citizens' initiative “Save the Oderdammallee”, it was also possible, after weeks of protests, to prevent 54 trees from being felled on the diplomatic stairs. In the course of the dike renovation, all trees on the Oder dike should give way. Just as it can be found on large sections of the Oder dike and also corresponds to the DIN standard for river dikes (DIN 19712). A solution was found in cooperation with the Brandenburg State Environment Agency (LUA). A pilot project of the State of Brandenburg on the Diplomatentreppe observed a sheet pile wall with a tree section without a sheet pile wall built into the top of the dike at 504 meters until 2011 .
