Dirk Helbing (born January 19, 1965 in Aalen , Germany ) is a German physicist and sociologist.

Since 2007 he has been Professor of Computational Social Science at the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences and a member of the Computer Science Department at ETH Zurich . In January 2014, Helbing received an honorary doctorate from the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft). Since June 2015 he has been an associate professor at the Faculty of Technology, Politics and Management at the Technical University of Delft , where he heads the doctoral school “Engineering Social Technologies for a Responsible Digital Future”.

Live and act

Dirk Helbing started out as a physicist. With his diploma thesis he initiated the field of pedestrian modeling and simulation. During his doctoral thesis and habilitation in physics, he helped to establish the areas of socio, economic and traffic physics. He was also a co-founder of the Physics of Socio-Economic Systems Section of the German Physical Society (DPG). As a visiting researcher at Tel Aviv University and the Weizmann Institute in Israel, Eötvös University in Budapest and Xerox PARC in California, he focused on various complex systems - from self-organization of pedestrians to mass panics and traffic jams as well as bacterial patterns to La Ola -Waves. At the Technical University of Dresden he was managing director of the Institute for Economics and Transport, worked on traffic assistance systems (i.e. early self-driving vehicles) and a self-organized traffic light control system that was patented. He discovered that many mass panics are caused by a phenomenon called crowd turbulence and worked on ways to reduce disasters and combat them more effectively. As a professor of sociology at ETH Zurich , he did research in the field of evolutionary game theory and agent-based computer simulation of social processes and phenomena.

Helbing's work is documented in numerous media reports and publications, including Nature , Science and PNAS . In 2012 he won the Ideen Suisse Award. He was the founder of the Competence Center for Crisis Management in Complex Socio-Economic Systems (CCSS) and co-founder of the Decision Laboratory (DeSciL), the Risk Center, the Citizen Science Competence Center, and the Hub for Ethics and Technology in Zurich, as well as the Blockchain Lab in Delft . While coordinating the FuturICT initiative, he helped develop data science and computational social science in Europe as well as global systems science.

Helbing is a member of the German Academy of Sciences at the Leopoldina and the World Academy for Art and Science and worked for the World Economic Forum within the framework of the Global Agenda Council for complex systems. He was elected to the external faculty of the Santa Fe Institute and today belongs to the external faculty of the Complexity Science Hub Vienna , sits on the boards of the Global Brain Institute in Brussels and the International Center for Earth Simulation in Geneva. He is a member of various state and academic science committees that deal with the digital transformation of our society.
