Dirk Erich Markus (born January 15, 1971 in Regensburg ) is a German entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of the listed investment group Aurelius .

Life

Markus comes from a family of humanities scholars. His father Manfred Markus was a professor of English at the University of Innsbruck , his mother a teacher. Dirk Markus studied business administration with a minor in Russian at the University of St. Gallen and the Copenhagen Business School . He received his doctorate on the subject of “Strategic Cooperation in the Multimedia Industry” in St. Gallen.

For more than 15 years he has been involved in the realignment and further development of companies, initially as a management consultant at McKinsey, where he was primarily concerned with the development and further development of e-commerce businesses on the Internet as a project manager . He then founded the Internet platform Mercateo , where he was responsible for financing and corporate development as a member of the board. After the company was sold to the E.ON Group, Dirk Markus co-founded a listed industrial holding company.

In 2001, as Peter Löw's junior partner, he co-founded the investment company Arques Industries (now Gigaset), whose business model he continued with Aurelius in 2005 after he left the company in 2004 . Together with Gert Purkert, Markus began to acquire companies in upheaval and special situations with start-up capital of 500,000 euros. Today Aurelius is a listed group with 22 subsidiaries and achieved sales of around 4 billion euros in the 2017 financial year. Within the board of directors, he is responsible for the overall management of the Aurelius Group. The company acquired u. a. Participations in the yacht manufacturer Hanse Yachts , the European business activities of the office supplies company Office Depot , in the TV station RTL Shop (sold in 2010) and in the Blaupunkt group. The majority stake taken over by the shipping company Peter Deilmann at the end of August 2010 caused a stir in the public eye for a double-digit million amount. With this, the Aurelius also took over the majority in the cruise ship Germany , known from the ZDF series " Das Traumschiff ".

Private

Markus lives in London. He also collects socialist poster art. On July 2, 1988, Markus set the Tyrolean track and field record 3 × 1000 m in the men under 18 category, which is still in place today. Markus is also a passionate racing cyclist and completed the Caste Ride in Tonbridge in the south of Great Britain in 2017 after eight hours.
