Dirk van Dalen (born December 20, 1932 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch mathematician (mathematical logic), science philosopher and mathematician.

Life

Van Dalen studied at the University of Amsterdam , where he received his doctorate on the application of the intuitionistic logic of Luitzen Egbertus Jan Brouwer in geometry under Arend Heyting in 1963 (Extensions in intuitionistic plane geometry, Indag.Math. Vol. 25). He was a post-doc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Oxford University . Since 1960 he has been at the University of Utrecht , first in the mathematics faculty since 1967 as a professor in the philosophy faculty. He retired in 1997, but continues to teach History of Logic and Philosophy of Mathematics (2009).

Van Dalen wrote a biography of Brouwer and directed the Brouwer project, editing lectures by Brouwer and Brouwer's 1981 On the Fundamentals of Mathematics and Intuitionism (1992, Bibliographical Institute) and the Centenary Symposium on Brouwer's 100th birthday with Anne Troelstra (1982 ).

In 2003 he received the medal (Akademiepenning) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. Since 1998 he has been a knight of the Order of the Dutch Lion. In 2007 he became an honorary member of the Dutch Mathematical Society ( Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap ), at the invitation of which he gave the lecture The Revolution of 1907 - Brouwers dissertation at the European Congress of Mathematicians in Amsterdam in 2008 . In 1962 he gave a lecture at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Stockholm ( Some problems in intuitionistic affine geometry ).

His doctoral students include Henk Barendregt , Lou van den Dries and Jan van Leeuwen .
