Dishonored 2: The Legacy of the mask is a stealth - action adventure of the French developer Arkane Studios , published by Bethesda Softworks . It was released worldwide on November 11, 2016 for Windows PCs , Xbox One and PlayStation 4 .

The game is the sequel to Dishonored: The Mask of Wrath , released in 2012 . Fifteen years after this, the player slips into the role of the “Imperial Protector” Corvo Attano or, alternatively, the role of his daughter, the now adult Empress, Emily Kaldwin, in order to uncover a conspiracy against the throne and a coup.

action

Dishonored 2 is set in the same fictional world as its predecessor Dishonored: The Mask of Anger , which has steampunk elements and is in an early phase of industrialization . The scene of the event is the Empire of the Islands , a rather loose association of de facto independent aristocratic lords who are , however, under the formal sovereignty of the emperor or the empress in Dunwall . A large, distant continent called Pandyssia is also known .

The action begins 15 years after the end of the first part. Emily Kaldwin now rules as Empress, supported by her father, the imperial patron and assassin Corvo Attano. In the capital, Dunwall, a murderer known as the Crown Assassin kills opponents of the Empress, which is why she is suspected of being behind the attacks. On the arrival of Duke Abele of Serkonos, the southernmost main island of the empire, a coup against Emily takes place. Supported by conspirators at court and in the guard, as well as the Duke of Serkonos, Emily is deposed; instead, a woman named Delilah ascends the throne who claims to be Emily's aunt from an illegitimate marriage of the old emperor (Emily's grandfather).

Shortly after the start of the game, the player is free to play either as Corvo or Emily; the other character is no longer available until the end. The player must now uncover the background of the conspiracy and the past of Delilah, who apparently has supernatural powers. For this purpose one travels to Karnaca, the capital of Serkonos and the homeland of Corvos, where the conspiracy apparently began. Little by little, ever larger parts of the prehistory are revealed in a total of nine chapters. These include the identity of the crown assassin, the plans of Duke Abele, the past of Delilah and the origin of her powers. In this context, the player has to infiltrate various locations, find clues and eliminate the Duke's confidants. Duke Abele rules Serkonos tyrannically and lets the once flourishing port city of Karnaca fall into ruin. He is not only protected by his own guard, but also by mechanical soldiers that the ingenious inventor and co-conspirator Kirin Jindosh constructed on his behalf.

The player is only indirectly supported, for example by a certain Megan Foster, who helped with the escape to Karnaca, but keeps a secret from her past herself. The player also has the option to act with supernatural means. He can expand these in the course of the game, as long as he tracks down the appropriate resources (called runes and artifacts) and brings them into his possession.

In principle, the player has several options to choose from when proceeding. He can act stealthily (on different paths) and with as little violence as possible - or act aggressively against the enemy and kill them. However, sightings of the player trigger alarms that lead more opponents into the area; Furthermore, enemies react to dead bodies found, for example. The more violence the player uses, the higher the so-called chaos level increases , which affects the end of the game.

reception

The expectations in the run-up to the publication were high, as the reactions at the Electronic Entertainment Expo 2016 and in this context the nominations for the Game Critics Awards show. The reception of the game after its release has been very positive overall. The design of the game world, the improved behavior of opponents, the telling of the story with believable characters and the playful possibilities were praised in various reviews.

Dishonored 2 relies on a new graphics engine called the Void Engine, which replaces the previous version ( Unreal Engine 3) and is based on a modified Id-Tech engine. The PC version of Dishonored 2 was criticized, however, due to some severe performance problems even on powerful PCs, which sometimes affects the flow of the game considerably. A corresponding patch was announced immediately, but in individual tests this led to a significant devaluation compared to the console version. Two beta patches published in the first few weeks after the release seem to have improved.

synchronization

For the German dubbing, Manfred Lehmann (as Corvo Attano ), Lehmann's daughter Dascha Lehmann (as Emily Kaldwin ), Hans-Georg Panczak (as Kirin Jindosh ) and Kim Hasper (as the Outsider ) were signed up. 55 voice actors were involved in the dubbing, which includes around 32,000 lines of dialogue.
