Daniel James Licht (born March 1957 in Detroit , Michigan ; † August 2, 2017 ) was an American composer who became famous for his film composition for the television series Dexter .

Life

After graduating from Hampshire College in Massachusetts in 1974 with a degree in jazz and world music composition, Licht moved to New York , where he tried to establish himself in the creative scene on the Lower East Side . He established himself quickly and not only played with jazz musicians such as Don Cherry , Jaki Byard or Dave Amram , he also used New York to travel through countries such as Germany , Holland , Japan and Indonesia as a composer for theater performances and dance ensembles studied the traditional music there. After Licht had already composed the music for some commercials , it was his former classmate Christopher Young who asked him to compose the score for the horror film Children of the Night .

Since then, Licht has mainly worked as a film composer for thriller, action and horror films from the B-film area such as Kinder des Zorns 2 - Tödliche Harvest , Hellraiser IV - Bloodline , Thinner - The Curse and Quatermain and the Treasure of King Solomon . However, he only gained greater fame through his participation in the crime series Dexter and most recently in the television series Body of Proof . On January 28, 2012, Licht received the composer of the year award at the third Russian Horror Film Awards in Moscow .

Licht died of complications from cancer on August 2, 2017. He left behind his wife and son.
