action

The engineer Bob Miller works for the waterworks of the city of San Paulo, California . His wife Susan works as a nurse at the local hospital. The water supply system is to be modernized, but the funds required and actually already promised will be saved by the mayor.

In the same year in San Paulo, during a period of heat, people from various backgrounds suffered inexplicable illnesses. It turns out that the disease is caused by previously unknown bacteria living in drinking water. These are neither eliminated by the separation processes previously used in the waterworks , nor are they killed by boiling the water. The symptoms of the disease are mainly severe thirst, which initially leads to patients who are already infected ingesting even more bacteria by consuming more drinking water and ultimately dying from the consequences of the infection. The mayor therefore orders that the city's water supply be turned off and promises the population that water will be delivered by truck. Schools will be closed, San Paulo will be quarantined . In the meantime, the son of Bob and Susan Miller and the son of a family friend have also fallen ill. After the latter dies, Susan and Bob decide to leave the danger zone, which they are denied due to the quarantine.

When, due to the ongoing heat wave, there were signs of a water shortage in the region and the trucks delivering drinking water were literally attacked and looted when they were released, the population began to demand that someone be responsible for the contamination and bring him to account. Shortly thereafter, Miller is publicly accused by the mayor of being responsible for the disaster and therefore suspended from service at the waterworks.

Miller then tries to find a solution single-handedly. In addition, his research reveals that the money that was originally earmarked for the modernization of the water supply went to a prestige large-scale construction project by the mayor. Ultimately, Miller finds a way to kill the bacteria with ozone . With a makeshift construction of tanks and a pump, he finally succeeds in producing decontaminated drinking water.

Reviews

Film-Dienst wrote that the film is a "conventional disaster film that seeks its salvation in the wake of the eco-movement". It doesn't seem to matter to him that the protagonist “casts out the devil with Beelzebub”.

tvspielfilm.de describes the film as "quite watery, but just so enjoyable".
