Discordian calendar
The Discordian calendar (also: Discordian calendar ) is a calendar system used by Discordianists . It divides the year into five 73-day cycles (seasons) or 73 five-day cycles (weeks). The Discordian calendar is a solar calendar , i.e. H. The length and change of the year are identical to the Gregorian calendar used today . Each date has a clear and constant correspondence in the other system. The Discordian calendar system was first published in 1969/70 as part of one of the later editions of the Principia Discordia . Its structure is based on the Discordian Law of Five .

The Discordian year is divided into five months of 73 days each, which are also called seasons ( in leap years there is an additional day between the first and second month, but which is not included in either of the two). The terms chaos, discord, confusion, bureaucracy and the end are also used as German translations of the month names.
The Erisian calendar and the cycle of the five seasons are derived from a kind of story of creation, fully described in one of the many insets of the Principia Discordia, the Book of Uterus . Accordingly, in the beginning there was the chaos, which arose from the non-existent Chao by chance, from whose disintegration the active power of discord emerged, a subtle manifestation of the non-existent Chao, which - if it was active - the state of confusion, confusion, reached. Confusion is the time of "Balanced Unbalance" or "Unbalanced Balance". The emerging confusion was called bureaucracy. In times of bureaucracy a state of "balanced balance" or stagnation is reached. After their fall, The Aftermath ("the finale") ushered in an age of disorder. Aftermath is the time of transition and restoration of free-flowing chaos, the state of the initial “Unbalanced Unbalance”. A cycle that is said to have repeated itself five times seventy-three times.
The goddess Eris herself is referred to as the Queen of Chaos, Daughter of the Discord and Concubine of Confusion.

The Discordian year has exactly 73 weeks. Each week consists of 5 days of the week . Since 365 is divisible by 5, the Discordian calendar system has the advantageous property that all dates such as B. Birthdays, fall on the same Discordian day of the week every year. The year (1.1.) Always begins with Sweetmorn , the first day of the week, and ends on New Year's Eve (May 73) with the setting orange , the fifth and last day of the week. Whereby in the English setting denotes the environment in which a drug experience takes place. The days of the week are named after the five Discordian "elements" sweet (sweet), boom (roar), pungent (piercing), prickle ( sparkling ) and orange (orange). They caricature the esoteric four-element and five-element teaching .
The Soviet revolutionary calendar used in the 1930s was also based on a five-day week . The principle of the same days of the week can also be found in the concept of a world calendar .
The structure, which is bound by the law of five , leads to a discordic calendar division based exclusively on the prime numbers 5 and 23 (365 = (5 + 5) × (5 × 5) + 5 × 23), where the 23, in addition to the five, is also recognized as "holy" according to the Principia Discordia.
Discordian Holidays
The fifth and fiftieth days of the five months are declared Discordian holidays.
The 5 Apostle Holydays take place on the 5th of each of the 5 months. They are each dedicated to one of the five (presumably fictitious) name cartridges:
- Patron Apostle Hung Mung ( Mung day)
- Patron Apostle Dr. Van Van Mojo ' ( Mojo Day)
- Patron Apostle Sri Syadasti (Syatag)
- Patron Apostle Zarathud (Zaratag)
- Patron Apostle Malaclypse the Elder (Malatag)

According to the Principia Discordia, in which the apostles are characterized in more detail, Sri Syadasti should not be confused with Blessed St. Gulik the Stoned , "who is not the same person, but the same apostle".
The 5 monthly holidays (Season Holydays) take place on the 50th of each month. It could also be said to take place 23 days before the end of the month. Since there are nine Discordian weeks between the two holidays of a month, i.e. a multiple of 5 days, both always fall on the same day of the week. The terms Chaofluss, Zwiefluss, Wirrfluss, Büroofluss and Ausfluss are also used as German translations of the monthly holidays.
The original orthographically idiosyncratic spelling of the holidays with y (Holydays) also makes them sound like wholly days (analogous to the phonetic puns Holy Cow and Holy Chao with wholly chao ).
In terms of calendar, St. Tib's Day is identical to February 29 and takes place as a public holiday approximately every four years, analogous to the leap day . The fact that it is inserted between the 59th and 60th day of the first month (chaos) and that no day of the week is assigned to it is the reason why the day and day of the week in the Discordian calendar always correspond to the same day in the Gregorian calendar even in leap years and vice versa.

The beginning and therefore the fixed point of the Erisian calendar is the year 1166 BC. Chr.
The intention behind the year counting was probably to synchronize the Discordian year 5 5 = 3125 with the founding year of Discordianism through consistent application of the law of five, resulting in the mentioned difference of 1166 years to the Gregorian calendar: 1959 - 5 5 = −1166.
In the Principia Discordia, the switching rhythm is "once in four years", which led to isolated St. Tib's Day disputes. In the Gregorian calendar, there are no leap days in full centuries that are not centuries, so that an anerisic-literal interpretation of the switching rules would result in the calendar systems drifting apart by about three days in four hundred years (analogous to the earlier Julian calendar ). However, it is said twice that it is a "perpetual" and a "Gregorian" calendar key. It can therefore be assumed that St. Tib's Day will be canceled in the years 2100 (3266 YOLD), 2200 (3366 YOLD) and 2300 (3466 YOLD) according to the Gregorian switching rule.
Date formats
While the Gregorian date format is standardized ( ISO 8601 ), in Discordianism numerous date variants are possible (and also desirable). In order to be able to distinguish between years, after discordic years there is often YOLD, which means Y ear of O ur L ady of D iscord ("Year of Our Lady of Discord"), a satirical allusion to the Christian "Year of Our Lord" .

The program ddate ( d iscordian date ) is used to convert a date into the Discordian calendar , in which various Discordian date formats can be set; ddate is installed by default in many Linux distributions . For Microsoft Windows , ddate can be found in the CygUtils for Windows program collection .
