Disocactus cinnabarinus is a species of the genus Disocactus in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet cinnabarinus comes from Latin , means 'vermilion' and refers to the color of the flowers.

Disocactus cinnabarinus grows creeping and / or leaning. The triangular, dark green shoots are very slender. They become 38 to 60 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide. The areoles are prominent. Up to 10 bristle-like, yellowish-brown thorns are up to 0.8 centimeters long.

The flowers are funnel-shaped, slightly curved up to 15 inches long and 8 to 9 inches in diameter. They are greenish red on the outside and the perianth segments are shiny brownish red.

Distribution and systematics

Disocactus cinnabarinus is distributed in the Mexican states of Chiapas , Oaxaca and Tabasco as well as in Guatemala and El Salvador at altitudes of 1500 to 3500 meters.

It was first described as Cereus cinnabarinus in 1910 by Wilhelm Weingart . Wilhelm Barthlott introduced the species to Disocactus in 1991 .

The following species are synonyms : Cereus cinnabarinus Eichlam ex Weing. (1910), Heliocereus cinnabarinus (Eichlam ex Weing.) Britton & Rose (1920), Disocactus speciosus subsp. cinnabarinus (Eichlam ex Weing.) Ralf Bauer (2003) and Heliocereus heterodoxus Standl. & Steyerm. (1944).
